Frequently asked questions
How many calories does my dog or cat need?
Vets start from the resting energy requirement, 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75, and multiply it by a life-stage factor. A neutered adult dog is typically around 1.6 times resting energy, and a neutered adult cat around 1.2.
Why does the answer differ from the feeding chart on the bag?
Bag charts are broad averages. Activity, age, breed, spay or neuter status and how your pet looks all change the right amount. Treat any calculator as a starting point.
How do I know if I'm feeding the right amount?
Check body shape and weight every few weeks. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat. If weight creeps up or down, adjust by about 10% and ask your vet.
Do treats count?
Yes. A common guideline is to keep treats to about 10% of daily calories and reduce meals to match.
